Cancel AL’s registration, ban activities: Nahid Islam

Dhaka, 02 May 2025 : National Citizen Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam has said the Awami League’s registration should be cancelled and its organizational activities must be banned.

The discussions that are moving ahead in politics are: reforms, elections, and the trial of the Awami League. None of these are contradictory to each other, rather democratic transformation is possible through all three.

He came up with these comments at the AB Party’s founding anniversary ceremony at the National Press Club, on Friday.

Nahid Islam said, “On August 5, the people of Bangladesh gave a verdict against the Awami League. They will never be able to do politics in this country again. So, the people will decide about the Awami League. There are two ways to make that decision- one is through voting, and the other is through a mass uprising on the streets, making their position known.”

He also said that there has been a mass uprising in the country, where the people of this country have rejected Mujibism and the Awami League. Awami League leaders have fled the country due to public anger. Even then, there is no discussion about whether the Awami League can do politics in this country or not. They have lost the moral foundation of politics.

Now the legal settlement for them will be how will we remove them from politics. Therefore, the Awami League’s registration should be cancelled immediately and their organizational activities must be banned.

The NCP convener said that all political parties are talking about reforms. We need to be united in a fundamental reform that will lead to a transfer of governance and power. If that doesn’t change, the aspirations of the people will not be fulfilled.

He said, “There have been always political conflicts about elections. To transfer power peacefully, the goodwill of political parties is needed beyond the institutional rules, the political culture needs to change, and the political parties need to gain trust and confidence among themselves. Otherwise, the attempt to transfer power peacefully will not be possible.”
